Paul Hourigan


Paul started ballet classes at the age of 6 years old joining the Australian Youth Ballet Company at 12. He travelled nationally on tours with the AYBC and on their International tours to the Edinburgh Youth Festival in Scotland and Chichester Festival in the United Kingdom. Paul also started his professional career dancing with the Queensland Ballet and Theatre production of Midsummer’s Night Dream and soloist roles with The Ballet Theatre of Queensland.

Pursuing his ballet training with the RAD Syllabus Paul was the recipient of the Kathleen Gorham Scholarship at the age of 14. He was offered a scholarship to attend the Queensland Dance School of Excellence, successfully attaining his Male Advanced Qualification in RAD at 16, finishing High School as the first male graduate of the combined dance and education year of QDSE.

After successful audition Paul accepted the offer to attend the Australian Ballet School where under the tutelage of the renowned Australian stars of ballet, Kelvin Coe, Marilyn Rowe Maver and John Meehan he successfully graduated after his three years at the school.

In is 2nd year Paul was invited by Marilyn Rowe Maver to become a member of the touring ‘Dancers Company’ of the Australian Ballet. Paul also toured internationally with the Dancers Company in his third year at the school performing soloist roles from Graeme Murphy’s ‘Signatures’ at the International Youth Dance Festivals in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan with intra-state tours of Regional Victoria.

Upon graduation Paul was offered a contract with the West Australian Ballet Company performing soloist roles with the company in the productions of the then Director Mr. Barry Moreland. After changing directions with his career overseas working extensively in the commercial dance scene represented by Pineapple Dance Agency in London, Paul returned to Australia to perform with the Rex Reid Ballet Victoria state tours and principal roles with the D-Xtyrior Contemporary Dance Company season of the ‘Passion’ at Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre. 


Paul currently teaches Ballet at Mad Dance House with guest teaching in Ballet Contemporary and Jazz for various Queensland dance Studios and is studying for his Masters Degree in Dance Research at Queensland University of Technology.
